Yesterday 62,000 new covid-19 infections were reported with more than 1,100 deaths from the decease in the US. That is the highest daily death toll in more than a month. With accelerating deaths and case numbers doctors now say the pandemic could be more devastating this fall and winter than it was when it first swept over the US.

Double Trouble
Both Iran and Russia are trying to interfere in the presidential election. Apparently the recent rash of emails to democratic supporters in Florida and elsewhere, saying they should vote for Trump or else, are coming from Iran although they were disguised as coming from the Proud Boys. The Proud Boys is a far-right and neo-fascist male-only organization that promotes and engages in political violence in the United States and Canada.

Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, has agreed to plead guilty to three federal criminal charges for its role in creating the nation’s opioid crisis. The company will pay more than $8 billion in fines, profit forfeitures and civil liabilities, and will eventually be dissolved. Then, a new “public benefit company” will be created that, according to the Justice Department, will act solely for the benefit of the American public.
